Henry South


Double Bass

The Musician

Henry South is a double bass player and music teacher based in Canberra where he is currently the Director of Music at St Mary MacKillop College. Originally from Adelaide, Henry studied double bass with David Schilling and Young-Hee Chan at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. He has performed with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian Youth Orchestra, Adelaide Art Orchestra, Australian National Academy of Music,  and the National Capital Orchestra. In 2023, Henry toured Spain and Portugal, performing with the Australian Strings Association Chamber Orchestra, where he led the double bass section. Besides performing on the double bass, Henry also enjoys playing the cello and viola, performing regularly with a string quintet known as Scribbly Strings, named after the Scribbly Gums found around the ACT region.


As a teacher, Henry believes that music learning is a universal right and that all children should be able to access quality music education. He is passionate about sharing the love of string playing with his students, helping them to achieve their playing goals and to develop a life-long appreciation of music.
