TRAVEL AND CHANGE

2024 Chamber Series

Baroque Music meets Philosophy!

Continuing on from the successful melding of Australian Poetry and Baroque Music last year, Apeiron continues to pair unlikely and interesting combinations of topics with our Early Music performances. Clear and obvious connections are easy, but it is the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated ideas that produce the true leaps in understanding!

Explore and absorb Philosophical ideas of Travel and Change, presented by Drew Ninnis, whilst listening to Early Music presented by Apeiron Baroque, John Ma and Marie Searles.

WHERE: Wesley Uniting Church, Forrest, ACT

WHEN: 9th June 2024, 4pm.

Coming Concerts

The Duke Speaks!

Wesley Lunchtime Series

On Wednesday 22nd May 2024 from 12.40 to 1.20pm, the Wesley Lunchtime concert series welcomes back the dynamic Violinist/Violist and Viola d’amore player, John Ma, in a program that demonstrates the beautiful qualities of his main Baroque violin – an English violin made by Richard Duke in London around 1770.

In Early Music, we often think of music more as "speech" and we try to emulate the forms of spoken rhetoric. Hence “the Duke speaks”.

WHERE: Wesley Music Centre, Forrest, ACT

WHEN: 22nd May 2024, 12:30pm.

Apeiron @ Gunning

Gunning Courtroom Chamber Music Series

"Devastatingly Capable Players"

We are delighted to host Apeiron Baroque for their first performance in the Courtroom - a really great venue for these musicians.

Violinist/Violist and viola d’amore player John is well known to Gunning, having directed the Musica da Camera String Orchestra for two rapturously received performances in the Shire Hall in recent years. At this concert in the Courtroom, he will joined by his wife Marie (fortepiano/harpsichord/piano).

Apeiron will present music from the Baroque era featuring a composer imitating birds, a bird imitating a composer, and music for the city siege! Hardware for the concert will include a harpsichord, a baroque violin, a mistuned violin, and a Viola dámore!

WHERE: Gunning Courthouse, NSW

WHEN: 2nd June 2024.

Smoky Salons

Wesley Lunchtime Series

On Wednesday 5th June 2024 from 12.40 to 1.20pm, the Wesley Lunchtime concert series presents violinist/violist John Ma and pianist Marie Searles in very different guise from their Baroque personas as Apeiron NOT-Baroque.

Their concert title reflects the program’s tango and "salon" music, including works by Debussy, Sculthorpe, Granados, Mendelssohn and Piazolla – much of which might be heard in a dark, smoke-filled dive or salon in the wee night hours, with an audience nursing drinks and a solitary pair of dancers or a violinist/pianist duo playing popular tunes.

WHERE: Wesley Music Centre, Forrest, ACT

WHEN: 5th June 2024, 12:30pm.

Magnificat

Luminescence Chamber Singers

“Ein schónes Lied von rechten Meistern, Kann Herze, Leib und Seel’ begeistern”
A beautiful song from the right teacher can inspire the heart, body, and soul.

The story of western music history is a story of mentorship. In MAGNIFICAT, the full gamut of Luminescence singers join forces with Aperion Baroque to trace the musical lineage of baroque composers, presenting gems from the Italian Renaissance and the Baroque era, and paying homage to the composers of the Ospedali Schools of Venice, where young singers studied under the tutelage of Italy’s finest musicians. Luminescence Children’s Choir performs Nicola Porpora’s Magnificat, and our youngest singers (Holiday Program participants) take to the stage in Christoph Ludwig Fehre’s 1751 Cantata ‘Der Schulmeister in der Singschule’ (The school master in the singing school), a comic piece about unruly students and their teacher’s efforts to control his class.
