The Musician

Multi-award-winning composer Michael Bakrnčev (pronounced bah-kahn-chev) is one of Australia’s leading young professionals in composition. His music has been performed by ensembles such as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Macedonian Philharmonic, and the Australian Youth Orchestra, as well as renowned chamber groups and soloists such as Plexus, the Brisbane Music Festival and the Sydney MicroFest.


Recent commissions include works for the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (in collaboration with poet and Rhodes Scholar Lisa Gorton), Black Square Quartet, Apeiron Baroque, and visual artist Izabela Pluta. His Elegy for piano has received international critical acclaim, while his organ work Bound for Glory, commissioned by Philip Gearing, is currently touring Europe.


Described as “neo-romantic from an alternate universe” by Australian composer Peggy Polias, Michael’s many accolades include the Adolph Spivakovsky Scholarship, the Silver Harris and Jeff Peck Award, and the Chamber Music Australia: New Works Award.


A member of the Australian Music Centre, Michael holds First-Class Honours degrees in composition from Griffith University and the University of Melbourne. He is the General Manager of South West Music Regional Conservatorium in New South Wales, where he champions music education and community engagement.
