Ben Hoadley is one of Australasia’s busiest bassoonists, working on both modern and historical instruments. He is principal bassoonist with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and Canberra Bach Ensemble and regularly appears as guest principal with the Sydney Symphony, Opera Australia, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and many others.
Previously based in the USA, Ben served as principal bassoonist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and worked as an extra the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras. He has also served as associate-principal bassoonist with the Trondheim Symphony (Norway) and as guest principal bassoon with the Hallé Orchestra (UK) and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Malaysian Philharmonic.
Ben currently teaches at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and at the Australian National University School of Music, and tutors for the Australian National Academy (ANAM), Australian Youth Orchestra and others. He a formerly Lecturer and Head of Woodwind at the University of Auckland School of Music in New Zealand.
After graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Ben continued studies on a full scholarship to the New England Conservatory in Boston. There he received the conservatory’s highest award for performance, the Artist Diploma. Ben has received fellowships to the Tanglewood Music Centre, Weill Music Academy at Carnegie Hall and the Australian National Academy of Music. He studied historical bassoon with Alberto Grazzi over several summers, also attending masterclasses at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
