Viola

The Musician

Alex, 19, performs professionally on both viola and harp and is currently pursuing a double degree in Music and Advanced Science (majoring in physics) at the Australian National University. Alex is a rank-and-file violist in the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and has participated in numerous Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) programs on both viola and harp.


He has performed with Apeiron Baroque, featuring in the "Too Many Strings" viola quartet (2023) and recently on tenor viola in “Something Old, Something New”, where “Alex Monro cut a confident and extroverted figure throughout” - Canberra CityNews. He has also played duets in Parliament House to showcase AYO and has performed solo at the Hungarian and Croatian embassies.


His excellence in music has been recognised with multiple awards, including the 2025 ANU Whitworth Roach Performance Scholarship, is a Wesley Scholar, was awarded the 2024 Musica Viva Strike a Chord Australian Prize as part of a string trio, the Canberra Grammar School (CGS) IBDP Prize for Music, and the CGS Barbara Fleming Prize for Musical Excellence. He also won the CGS Concerto Competition, playing a concerto with the CGS Orchestra.

Alex studies viola with Marianne Yeomans, with occasional lessons with Tor Frømyhr, Stephen King, and Kirsten Williams, and studies harp with Alice Giles.

The Person

When Alex is not performing or practicing, he enjoys immersing himself in fantasy worlds through reading, watching films, and composing.
